  • Best Mess-Free Activities for Kids

    September 26, 2024 5 min read

Sensory play is an essential activity for kids' growth.  Children learn motor skills, develop intelligence, and mature into better adults.  However, while we love to let our kids enjoy themselves, few of us love to clean up their mess.

After all, we’re busy parents, right?  Between juggling workplace demands, doing laundry, and preparing meals, the last thing we want is a messy house.  Despite all this, playtime is an important part of kids' growth, especially when you’re trying to keep them off screens.

So, what’s the answer?  Why not try mess-free sensory play activities? This article discusses the best fun activities for kids that won't mess up your home.

    Modelling Clay Activities

Modelling clay is an awesome material for kids to develop and refine their fine motor skills.  As an open-ended activity, clay modelling sparks kids' imaginations as they experiment with textures and techniques, such as pinching, patting, kneading and rolling.  Basic clay projects for kids include making coil pots, hand-shaped dishes, jewellery and ornaments.  Crazy Clay is an ingenious modelling clay that can be reused again and again.  Once your child is happy with their creation, bake it in the oven.  A small block of Crazy Clay goes a long way and can be painted after baking.

    Sensory Bags

Sensory bags make excellent mess-free play items.  While they’re readily available in toy shops, you don’t have to buy them.  With just a little creativity, you can make your own.

Simply pour some non-toxic liquid into a sealable bag (paint, hair gel and baby oil are common ingredients to use) then close it tight.  There you go!  Better yet, you can mix ingredients or add leaves, eco-friendly glitter, pom-poms or small toys to enrich the experience. Sensory bags develop a child’s sense of observation, language and fine motor skills.  Ask your child to describe the colours they see and the textures they feel to start a conversation and keep them engaged.

    Audio Play

Music has a profound effect on children, even from a very young age.  Adding audio to their playtime is a great mess-free activity.  Not only is it fun, but it helps nurture their talent from an early age.

Getting started with kids' music is easy. Toy shops stock all types of children's musical instruments and audio toys, although you can also make your own using everyday materials. Tapping old pots with pencils or spoons and blowing through cardboard tubes are just some of the many homemade musical instruments you can create.  Inspire your child with a few simple play items and let the band begin!

    Watercolour Painting

Many activities involving paint are messy.  Thankfully, that’s not the case watercolour painting. As long as you don't use too much water you won’t have to worry about spills and stains.  Being a solid paint encased in a tin or palette, watercolour painting is also a portable activity to take outside and minimise mess.

Setting up a watercolour painting activity is also quick and easy.  A simple sketchbook makes a great canvas or, for a reusable option, paint a silicone colouring mat that can be washed.  The great thing about watercolour painting is that you can clean the items and keep them for another mess-free play day!

    Blowing Bubbles

Blowing bubbles is one of the easiest and cleanest forms of play. All you need is a few drops of detergent stirred in a little water.

Next, get your child to dip a circular wand and remove it from the solution.  As they gently blow through the hole that forms, bubbles are blown into the air.  Kids can then have fun chasing and playing with them.

What if you don't have ready-made bubble wands?  Don't worry.  Look for suitable items within your house - paper clips, cookie cutters and shaped pipe-cleaners – to make your own wands for bubble-making.

    Playdough

Playdough is one of the most fun fine-motor skills toys for young children.  As an open-ended play activity, it makes learning enjoyable for kids of all ages.

When you combine playdough with a large silicone craft mat, you ignite your child’s imagination without worrying about any mess.  The surface is smooth and non-stick for endless, clean fun.  It also has a removable cup for playdough tools and a palette for sorting decorations.

Silicone craft mats can be wiped clean or tossed in the dishwasher or washing machine for a deep clean.  As an activity that’s simple to set up and painless to pack away, playdough is the perfect mess-free activity for kids!

    Balloons Games

Playing with balloons is a quick and versatile children's game.  All you need is a few balloons (we recommend a biodegradable kind) filled with air.  These become the basis for various games including Keepy Uppy, football or handball.  They can also be used for a variety of crafts and house decorations.  The downside is the balloon might burst, but the popping sound adds a touch of excitement to your child’s play.  Remember to watch out for potential choking hazards if young children are involved.

    Making Shapes with Origami Paper

If your kids love paper crafts, they’ll love making origami shapes.  You can order patterned paper squares online or trim your regular printer paper to size.  Whichever paper is used, making shapes is excellent for children’s imagination and creative thinking. They can make planes, animals, geometric shapes and more.

Beginners will benefit from a book about origami or online tutorials.  Some folding techniques may also require the help of an older person.  Either way, fine motor activities like origami are worth every moment for children as they’re an opportunity to practice a traditional craft and develop new skills.

    Obstacle Course

Sometimes children need vigorous activities and games to burn off excessive energy.  An obstacle course that includes hopping, stepping and jumping is fun and offers many benefits.

Obstacle course games build endurance, develop gross motor skills and enhance mental concentration.  The good thing is you don't need any fancy equipment.  Some of the best obstacle courses for kids are made from household objects such as wood, pillows, rocks, and plastic containers.  Position these items across your driveway or backyard to get your kids hopping and jumping!

    Role Play Games

Children like to mimic the role models in their lives; their parents and public figures. It’s a natural part of childhood development and an activity that builds kids’ confidence and social skills.

Look around your house for old clothes and props to help your child dress like their hero.  With a little support and encouragement, kids will have fun acting as different characters.  You might be surprised by their performance!
