  • Eco-Friendly Creative Play: Raising Conscious Kids Through Sustainable Fun

    October 07, 2024 4 min read

It started with a cardboard box. Not a flashy toy, not a screen or a gadget. Just a humble cardboard box that became a pirate ship, a post office, and finally, a castle with a drawbridge made of string and sticky tape. It was one of those magical afternoons when the living room was overtaken by imagination. As a parent, watching that transformation happen is one of life's quiet joys. But there's an even greater magic in knowing that this kind of play is not only sparking creativity but also leaving a lighter footprint on the planet.

Why Eco-Friendly Play Matters More Than Ever

In a world of fast fashion and faster tech, it's easy to forget that our children are growing up surrounded by "stuff". In fact, research shows that the average child in a developed country owns more than 238 toys but only plays with 12 daily. This surplus contributes to significant waste, as many unused toys are discarded. Globally, over 450 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually, much of which ends up in landfills or the environment.

The antidote? Sustainable, creative play that supports development and the environment.

According to Dr Jane Warren from the University of Wollongong, “Supporting children and young people to connect with and contribute to their world is essential and provides a foundation for them to become active, responsible citizens, now and in their futures.”1

    Nurture Imagination, Protect the Planet

Children are naturally imaginative. The key is to nurture that imagination with open-ended toys that do more good than harm. Eco-friendly creative play encourages kids to:

    • Use their imagination freely instead of relying on pre-programmed screens or battery-powered toys.
    • Understand sustainability by interacting with toys and materials that are reusable, biodegradable or ethically made.
    • Feel empowered knowing their play choices can help protect the environment.

Research found that fewer toys in a child’s environment can lead to better attention, more creativity, and overall higher quality play. In this case, it seems that ‘less is more’.

Angela, mum to a lively 6-year-old, knows the struggle all too well - and she’s not alone.  “All the stuff lying around just drives me nuts,” she admits. “It barely gets used most of the time, but there it is, collecting dust. Then suddenly it’s the flavour of the week again, and chaos breaks loose!”  With toys scattered far and wide, Angela finds herself constantly picking up the pieces to keep their living areas usable. As for counting the number of toys in the house? Forget it. But she says craft supplies and drawing activities see the most love.

At Little Change Creators, we see play as a form of positive change. That’s why we design products that go beyond the play session. Our reusable colouring sets and eco-conscious craft kits support screen-free fun without the waste. They help children express themselves artistically while forming lifelong habits that care for people and the planet.

Screen-Free Fun That Feeds the Soul

Screens are everywhere. While they can be convenient, overuse is affecting our children’s well-being. According to the Australian Department of Health, kids aged 5-17 should have no more than two hours of recreational screen time per day.2  Yet most kids exceed this by double.

One antidote? Hands-on, screen-free creative activities. Think:

    • Recycled cardboard crafting (build robots, habitats, or puppet theatres)
    • Nature art (leaf rubbings, rock painting, mud kitchen creations)
    • Homemade playdough and salt dough (eco-friendly and fun to make together)
    • Re-FUN-able colouring mats (like ours!) that wipe clean and reuse again and again

Sustainable Toy Ideas That Go the Distance

    When choosing toys, look for:

    • Longevity: Will it last beyond a few uses?
    • Materials: Is it made from renewable, recycled or biodegradable materials?
    • Open-ended play: Can it be used in multiple ways?

Some of our favourite planet-friendly toy swaps:

    • Plastic dolls → Fabric or wood-based dolls from ethical brands
    • Disposable crafts → Reusable craft mats and refillable supplies
    • Noisy plastic gadgets → Handmade instruments or musical toys from FSC-certified wood
    • Plastic storage bins → Upcycled boxes kids can decorate themselves

    Earth-Loving Craft Hacks for Kids

Craft time doesn't have to equal chaos and landfill. Here are a few green hacks for creative fun:

    • Repurpose what you already have: Egg cartons, cereal boxes, fabric scraps, old buttons.
    • Ditch glitter: It’s microplastic! Try salt, coloured sugar or biodegradable glitter instead.
    • Make your own paints: Use beetroot, turmeric, or spinach for natural pigments.
    • Use washable and reusable materials: Like our silicone painting mats and reusable clay.
    • Clean green: Our sustainable cleaning tips make tidying up a breeze.

These small choices add up to big impact, especially when our kids are watching (and they always are!).

Teaching Kids That Creativity Can Be Kind

Creative play is more than passing time. It shapes how our children see the world and their role within it. By choosing eco-friendly alternatives, we're teaching them that imagination, joy and sustainability can coexist.

As Malte Niebelschuetz3, Founder and CEO of Shore Buddies (the world’s first stuffed animal made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles) puts it, “Incorporating toys into learning can result in a much faster learning curve. Just as many of us learned about the human body by playing the game ‘Operation’ rather than from reading a book, the same idea can be applied to sustainability.

    The Little Change Creators Way

We believe children can be a powerful force for good. That’s why Little Change Creators is on a mission to inspire mindful, sustainable habits through screen-free, creative fun. Our award-winning Re-FUN-able™ Colouring Sets and Re-CRAFT-able™ Creativity Sets are designed to make eco-friendly play simple for parents and super-fun for kids.
